HISTORY OF THE REGION: The presence of the society in the region dates back to the very beginning of the society. The donation of the premises of the old St. Mark’s Teachers Training College by the late Bishop Sanusi of Blessed memory to the society was the beginning of the presence of the MSP family in Iperu Remo. The former Teachers Training college premises became the formation house for the new congregation. The premises became the Promotions, Vocations and Publishing houses respectively for the Society. With the ordination of MSP priests, many were assigned to the various departments of the society in Iperu. With the increase in the number of MSP priests ordained and their assignment to different apostolates both in Iperu and within Southern Nigeria, it became necessary for the creation of a Mission in the Southof the country that will cover not just Iperu but other places in Southern Nigeria. Consequently, on March 15, 2006, the then Superior General, Very Revd Fr Hyacinth Egbebo, MSP issued a Decree of Erection of the MSP Nigeria South Mission. Revd Fr Moses Amune, MSP was appointed the first Local Superior of the newly erected mission. With the growth of the MSP Nigeria South Mission, it became necessary to upgrade the status of the mission. In keeping with the mandate of the third General Chapter of the Society and in line with the directives of Art 78 of the Constitutions of the Missionary Society of St. Paul of Nigeria, the then Superior General, Very Revd Fr Anselm Umoren, MSP issued the Decree of Erection of the Nigeria South Region on June 26, 2009. Revd Fr Anthony Bassey, MSP was appointed as the first Regional Superior of the newly erected region. The region has continued to grow with the presence of many brothers and the growth of the apostolate of the society expanding to many archdioceses and dioceses in Southern Nigeria.
